Wrought Iron Fence Information

by Home And Garden Experts

A wrought iron fence is a beautiful addition to any home.  The classic look of wrought iron and its exceptional strength have made it the material of choice for fence construction for generations.  Wrought iron fencing will add more value to your home than traditional aluminum fencing for its pleasing look and the intricacy of its designs.  Before deciding which fence to choose, consider your expectations of the fence, your budget and whether you would like to install it yourself or contract the installation.

The first decision to make when considering the addition of a fence to your property is the material with which the fence will be constructed.  Two of the most popular options are aluminum and wrought iron.  Aluminum fencing is typically the less expensive of the two options.  Lengths of fence are lighter and may be easier to install.  They require no maintenance, so the homeowner’s work is complete after installation.  The biggest drawback to much of the available aluminum fencing is the look.  Many people balk at the typical crosshatch patterns and in some locales, homeowners associations have banned this fencing entirely.  The light metal makes it far less sturdy than true wrought iron fences and gates.  Wrought iron is a far more secure material for blocking driveways and sheltering yards.  Be aware that wrought iron will rust, but with regular maintenance, will last forever.

Wrought iron fence installation may seem intimidating, but can be a do-it-yourself project.  Iron is a heavy material, so small sections of low fence will be the easiest to install.  The fence you purchase will come with individual instructions, but most are installed in the same way.  A heavy fence must be well anchored, so dig a hole in the ground where each support rod will be placed.  Though it may be possible simply to bury the rod for a small fence, most require that concrete is poured into the hole to provide additional stability.  This process is not terribly difficult, but it is time consuming, so it may be best left to the professionals.  Be aware that fences so anchored may require permission for installation, so be sure to obtain all necessary permits before you begin.

There are so many wrought iron fence designs to choose from that you can find one that looks like it was customized for your home or neighborhood.  Those with older, Victorian style homes should consider some of the more intricate design options.  This will make the fence look as though it is original to the house and create a harmonious look.  The durability of the material means that there are a number of sources for buying pieces of antique wrought iron fence.  Often, lengths of fence large enough to surround an entire property can be found through estate sales.  If only a few sections are available in your favorite design, incorporate them into your modern wrought iron fence to add interest.

Whether you are looking to add security, value or beauty to your home, consider installing a wrought iron fence.  For those who love the look, but cannot afford true wrought iron, consider faux wrought iron options.
