Kitchen lights

One of the biggest attractions of any home is its kitchen, which is why it is important to consider which types of kitchen lights to install, in order to highlight that very special feature of your home.

The home kitchen can serve multiple functions. In a family home, it is often a place that offers comfort, warmth, and laughter. It is sure to be filled with the familiar smells of home cooking and baking, and is often a hub for family activity. During parties the kitchen is always a popular place to convene and converse, often over a good glass of wine, or the preparation of good food.

Surprisingly, the mood of any kitchen is most often largely determined by its lighting system. Consider, for example, the older fashioned kitchen that often featured a wood burning fireplace. This fireplace served multiple functions, which included the cooking of food, providing warmth during cold months, and keeping the kitchen lit once the daylight began to fade. It also created a warm and comforting environment, and was therefore often the center of household activity. The more aware an individual is of the overall effect of their kitchen lighting, the more they will be able to use that lighting to their best advantage when attempting to create a specific atmosphere or mood.

A kitchen light may serve a specific or multiple functions. These functions may include the necessity of lighting workspaces, such as cutting surfaces or the lighting of a cookbook in use, it may be decorative or provide an accent, highlighting a particularly impressive or interesting feature of the kitchen, or it might provide ambient light in the form of warmth or by softening harsh shadows. Kitchens light fixtures that are uniquely intended to help accomplish a task risk making the kitchen appear one-dimensional or unfriendly, while fixtures installed in inconvenient locations reduce the efficiency of production and may even deter an individual from using their kitchen altogether.

Two popular types of lighting fixtures that are being installed in today’s modern kitchens include track lighting and island lights. Both types of fixture serve aspects of the functions listed above. Kitchen track lighting is often a track of multiple lights that runs along the ceiling, offering a modern style alternative to the standard single light bulb fixture or fluorescent light. Each of the individual lights can be pointed in a different direction, in order to cast light into specific corners, or highlight certain aspects of the kitchen that an individual may be particularly proud of; a work of art, some rare china, or even a new appliance. Kitchen island lights are very functional when positioned specifically to illuminate island surfaces, which are often central work surfaces for either stovetop or counter work.

Clearly an individual’s or designer’s decisions when installing lighting can radically change the mood and atmosphere of a room. When considering the layout of that central room of the home, the kitchen, don’t forget to take into account what kind of mood you wish your kitchen to exude, and make sure that that layout of the kitchen lights reflects this mood accordingly.
