Gun Cabinets: Finding the Right One for You

by Home And Garden Experts

If you are a gun collector or gun user gun cabinets are a must have in your home. Gun cabinets are not only purchased for looks but for safety. Keeping your guns out little hands or the wrong hands is as important as cleaning and caring for your guns.

Gun storage cabinets are built with several types of materials and several different styles. The right one for you is going to come down to a few things. Do you want a safe like gun cabinet or one that will also display your guns? Do you want your gun cabinet to fit in with the decor of your home? Do you like the look of off the shelf cabinets or do you want one that is custom made to fit your tastes?

Cabinets come in two main styles, wooden and metal. While metal is typical used in gun safes, there are metal cabinets that have wooden accent panels inside and out to give it a more natural look. While it does not have the same sense and style and warmth of wood gun cabinets it does allow for some flexibility when matching the cabinet with other furniture in the room. No matter what material the cabinet is made of they typically hold between 6 and 16 guns for off the shelf products. If you have a larger collection of guns you may want to look at a custom cabinet to better fit your needs or multiple cabinets will need to be purchased.

Wooden cabinets are a great choice for the collector. Wooden cabinets act as more of a showcase than a simple place to lockup your guns. Typically they have doors with glass window inserts to show off your guns. Wooden cabinets are great because they can be purchased both off the shelf or you can have them custom made to your specs for any size collection. Also there are many different types of wood to choose from pine, oak, and teak. Oak gun cabinets are the most popular choice when having a cabinet custom made. Oak is a very strong wood and is not as soft as pine that is used for off the shelf units giving them the edge for extra safety in their strength.

One thing you want to make sure of when it comes to all wooden cabinets is that they are built with hinges that face the inside of the cabinet. If the hinges are exposed towards the outside it makes the cabinet easier to get into and allow your guns to get into the wrong hands. If you don’t want to show off your collection it is a good idea to go with full wooden door panels as opposed to glass for extra security.

When it comes to matching the decor in your house wood is a great choice. It can be painted any color but the beauty of wood really comes out when it is stained. There are many colors of stain available to match any decor in your home. If you are up to the challenge you can also have your cabinet shipped to you unfinished and do the staining and finish work yourself.

As you can see there are several factors to take into account when shopping for gun cabinets. Keep all of these in mind or make yourself a checklist when doing your shopping. Doing this will help you ensure you get just the cabinet to fit your needs for now and the future.
